Debt Management
Unfortunately, debt has become a common issue that is dealt with on a day to day basis by the staff and volunteers at the Centre. We have been able to assist thousands of people begin to get their life in order, advising how to keep debt collectors away from their door, prioritising debts, negotiating payments and helping them to avoid court action.

A self-help pack is available from the Centre, so that you can begin to make some sense of what you owe, and begin to prioritise payments.
Drop-in sessions are run at the Centre, where you can get initial advice and a plan of action can be agreed.
It is not a crime just to owe money you can’t go to jail if you can’t pay. It is never too late to tackle your debts. Lot’s of people solve their problems by using our self–help pack.
There are few basic rules that can help:
- Tackle your priority debts first- those debts which mean you can lose your home, or have your electricity or gas cut off. There are still a few debts for which you can go to prison if you can pay but don’t. These include taxes, Council Tax, Maintenance and Magistrate Court fines. You can’t go to jail for normal debts like rent, credit etc.
- Write down your income and expenditure; work out what you can afford to offer.
- Always attend court hearings and return court papers
- Don’t borrow money to clear debts
- Ring us or call in if anything is unclear and you need assistance.
